Secondary School Direct

Our Secondary Programme is delivered in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and Ashton on Mersey School SCITT, the training lasts for one academic year (September-July).

On completion of your training year you will be awarded a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (SCITT). Your Secondary Programme will consist of a combination of classroom practice and relevant training. You will be given the opportunity to spend much of your time ‘practising your craft’ with high quality school placements from across our SCITT partner schools.  You will be supported along the way by a number of different colleagues and will be assigned a Subject/Class Mentor, a Professional Mentor and a Link tutor.

Ashton on Mersey SCITT will offer the following subjects, in 2018/19:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Geography
  • History
  • Maths
  • Modern Foreign Languages
  • Physics

The programme starts with an intensive ‘Summer School’ during August 2018

The programme will consist of school-based training and centre-based training days. You will train across at least two school placements.

Our Secondary Programme has four areas of learning:

  • Centre Based Learning – session based activities delivered at Ashton on Mersey School or Manchester Metropolitan University
  • School Based Learning – learning activity completed at your placement schools
  • Guided Learning – learning completed on an individual basis
  • Enrichment Learning – This allows you (with the help of course leaders) to select an area of focus tailoring the programme to your own needs or interests.

It is really important to us that these four learning areas fit together to ensure a cohesive and progressive programme of study.
